Slovenia offers remote professionals, freelancers, and owners of foreign businesses the opportunity to obtain a temporary residence permit under the Digital Nomad program. The permit is intended for citizens of countries outside the EU and EEA who work remotely and receive income from foreign sources.

The residence permit allows applicants to legally reside in Slovenia for up to one year without entering the local labor market or obtaining a separate work permit for foreign remote activities. The program is suitable for those who want to relocate to Europe while continuing to work for a foreign company, international clients, or their own business outside Slovenia.

Wolja Digital provides support with obtaining a Slovenian residence permit under the Digital Nomad program, from the initial assessment of the applicant’s situation through to obtaining the permit. We review the employment model and source of income, prepare the document package, coordinate the procedure with the Slovenian side, and assess further options in advance if the client is considering Slovenia not just for one year but for long-term relocation.

Who Is the Digital Nomad Residence Permit in Slovenia Suitable For?

The main condition of the program relates to the nature of the applicant’s professional activities. The applicant must work remotely and receive income from an employer, clients, or a business outside Slovenia. The Digital Nomad program is not intended for employment in the local labor market.

A residence permit may be considered in three main situations:

  • Remote work for a foreign company. The professional maintains their existing employment or contractual relationship and performs their work remotely from Slovenia.
  • Freelance work with foreign clients. The applicant provides services to foreign clients and can document the nature of their activities and the income received.
  • Owning a business outside Slovenia. The entrepreneur continues to operate through a foreign company without transferring its activities to the Slovenian market.

For IT professionals, the program is particularly convenient because it does not require them to change their existing working model solely to obtain legal status in Slovenia. A developer, designer, IT consultant, product or project specialist can continue working with a foreign employer or clients provided that they meet the program requirements.

However, the mere fact of working online does not automatically make an applicant eligible for the Digital Nomad program. Before applying, contracts, the income structure, and other documents should be reviewed to ensure that they clearly demonstrate the applicant’s actual professional model.

What Does a Slovenian Residence Permit Provide to a Digital Nomad?

The main advantage of the program is the ability to legally relocate to Slovenia without transferring employment relationships or a business there. The applicant does not need to obtain employment with a local company solely to establish a basis for residence.

The residence permit provides a legal basis for living in the country, renting accommodation, and dealing with other everyday and administrative matters. Holding a valid Slovenian residence permit also allows the holder to benefit from the rules on travel within the Schengen Area.

For families, the program may be particularly attractive because a spouse and children can join the applicant without a lengthy prior waiting period. This makes it possible to plan relocation for the entire family from the outset rather than first obtaining a permit for the main applicant and beginning a separate family reunification process much later.

At the same time, the Digital Nomad program should not be regarded as equivalent to a Slovenian work permit. If, after relocating, the applicant decides to work for a local employer or engage in activities that do not meet the program conditions, an appropriate alternative basis will need to be assessed separately.

Income Requirements for Digital Nomads

One of the key requirements is proof of sufficient income. The required level is linked to the average net salary in Slovenia and may therefore change along with the relevant indicator.

As of mid-2026, the indicative amount is approximately EUR 3,098 per month, which is twice the average net salary. The current amount should be checked again before applying.

Financial capacity may be demonstrated using documents appropriate to the applicant’s working model, such as an agreement with an employer or clients, payment records, bank statements, and other evidence of regular income.

Entrepreneurs and freelancers should pay particular attention to the financial part of the application. Unlike an employee with a fixed salary, their income may vary from month to month or come from several clients. In this case, the objective is not simply to show the required amount in a bank account but to provide documentary evidence explaining the sustainable source of income.

When relocating with family members, the financial requirements should be calculated taking the family members into account.

What Documents Are Required to Obtain a Residence Permit?

The exact set of documents is determined individually, but the applicant must provide evidence of their identity, good standing, professional activities, and financial capacity.

The basic package may include:

  • a copy of the passport with the required notarization and apostille
  • a criminal record certificate with an apostille
  • a power of attorney if the applicant is represented by an authorized representative
  • documents confirming remote employment, entrepreneurial activities, or relationships with foreign clients
  • financial documents confirming the required level of income

One common mistake when preparing such applications is collecting documents separately from one another. Formally, an agreement, bank statement, and company information may all be correct, but together they may fail to provide a clear picture of what the applicant does and where their income comes from.

For this reason, Wolja Digital reviews the application package as a whole. The documents should not only be included in the application but should also consistently demonstrate that the particular applicant meets the Digital Nomad requirements.

Slovenian Residence Permit for Family Members

The program makes it possible to plan relocation not only for the main applicant but also for their family. A spouse and children may join the applicant without a lengthy waiting period linked to the main applicant having lived in the country for several years.

For family relocation, it is important to determine in advance who will be applying, the applicable financial requirements, and the documents confirming family relationships. If the entire family plans to relocate from the outset, this should be taken into account when structuring the procedure for the main applicant.

This approach helps avoid a situation in which one person’s residence permit has already been obtained while the requirements and documents for the other family members are only analyzed after the main applicant has relocated.

How to Obtain a Slovenian Digital Nomad Residence Permit

The process begins not with collecting certificates but with reviewing the applicant’s circumstances. At the first stage, it is necessary to determine whether the nature of the applicant’s work meets the program requirements, whether the foreign source of income can be documented, and which documents will be required in the specific case.

After that, the procedure consists of several stages:

1

Assessment of the situation. We review the applicant’s employment, source and level of income, family composition, and plans for living in Slovenia.

2

Document preparation. We prepare an individual document checklist, review the documents, and arrange the required notarization and apostilles.

3

Application submission. The prepared package is submitted for processing of the residence permit.

4

Biometrics and processing. The applicant completes the mandatory in-person stage of the procedure, after which the documents are reviewed by the competent authority.

5

Obtaining the residence permit. Following a positive decision, the applicant receives a Slovenian residence permit.

The estimated total duration of the procedure is 4–5 months. This includes document preparation and application processing, although the actual timeframe depends on the circumstances of the case and the workload of the government authorities.

A significant part of the procedure can be arranged without the applicant being continuously present in Slovenia. Personal attendance is required at the stages prescribed by law, including the submission of biometric data.

What Happens After the First Year?

This is one of the most important issues to address before applying for the Digital Nomad program.

The permit is issued for up to one year and is not designed for standard consecutive renewal in the same category. The program therefore works well as a standalone solution for temporary relocation but requires additional planning if the applicant wants to remain in Slovenia for longer.

In the latter case, it is necessary to determine in advance which basis can provide for continued legal residence. This will depend on how the client’s circumstances change: whether they plan to conduct business activities in Slovenia, work under a different model, or use another basis provided by law.

This is why we separate the process into two tasks. The first is obtaining a Digital Nomad residence permit for the coming year. The second is developing a long-term strategy if the client’s objective is not temporary residence but to continue living in Slovenia.

With this approach, the decision on the next status is not made only a few weeks before the existing residence permit expires. Possible options and their requirements are analyzed in advance so that the first year can be used to prepare for the next stage.

When the Digital Nomad Program May Not Be the Best Option

Despite the relatively straightforward structure of the program, choosing it solely because the applicant works remotely is not always the most appropriate approach.

The Digital Nomad program is intended for people who want to live in Slovenia while maintaining their professional activities outside the country. If the objective is to work for a local company, establish a business directly in Slovenia, or relocate long-term under a different model, an alternative basis may be better suited to the applicant’s plans.

This is particularly important if Slovenia is being considered as a permanent country of residence. In this case, it is necessary to assess not only how easy it is to obtain the first residence permit but also what will happen after it expires.

Therefore, before applying, we determine not only whether the applicant formally qualifies for the Digital Nomad program but also how well the program aligns with the client’s ultimate objective.

Slovenian Residence Permit Support with Wolja Digital

Obtaining a residence permit involves more than simply submitting an application. A remote professional must demonstrate the nature of their employment and income; an entrepreneur must additionally explain their corporate structure; and in the case of family relocation, the documents and financial requirements for several applicants must be coordinated.

Wolja Digital structures the procedure around the client’s specific circumstances. We first determine whether the Digital Nomad program is suitable and which circumstances may require additional preparation. We then prepare the document package, support the application process, and coordinate communication with the Slovenian side.

Our support may include:

  • preliminary assessment of eligibility for a residence permit
  • analysis of the employment model and foreign source of income
  • preparation of an individual document checklist
  • review and preparation of documents for submission
  • arrangement of the required notarization and apostilles
  • coordination of the application process and communication with the Slovenian side
  • support through to obtaining the permit
  • analysis of the future residence strategy after the Digital Nomad permit expires

This type of support is particularly relevant for applicants whose circumstances go beyond the standard «one employer, one salary» model: company owners, freelancers with multiple clients, families, and professionals who are changing their tax residency at the same time as relocating.

The cost of our services is determined individually after assessing the client’s circumstances, family composition, and the scope of the required documentation.

Obtain a Slovenian Residence Permit Under the Digital Nomad Program

The Digital Nomad program is suitable for those who want to live legally in Slovenia while continuing to work remotely, serve foreign clients, or operate a business outside the country. However, successful relocation depends on more than simply meeting the formal requirements. It is important to properly document the source of income, prepare a consistent application package, take family circumstances into account, and understand which basis for residence will be used after the first year.

Wolja Digital supports this process as a comprehensive relocation project. We help determine the appropriate model, prepare the documents, and guide clients through the residence permit procedure, while also assessing the future residence strategy in Slovenia in advance for those planning a long-term relocation.
