Proof of Address for Digital Nomads: How to Confirm Your Place of Residence Without Utility Bills

A digital nomad may legally live in another country, rent an apartment, and earn income from foreign clients without having a single utility bill in their own name. Electricity, water, and internet accounts often remain in the property owner’s name, while people staying in an aparthotel or coliving space may not receive separate utility bills at all.

The problem arises when opening a bank account, registering with a payment service, or undergoing a repeated review of an existing account. The financial institution requests proof of address, but a standard utility bill cannot be provided.

A utility bill is a common but not the only way to confirm an address. Depending on the rules of the bank or platform, a lease agreement, bank statement, tax document, certificate of residence registration, or official letter from a government authority may be accepted.

The main objective is not simply to find any document containing an address. It must confirm the current place of residence, correspond to the information in the profile, and be included in the list of documents accepted by the specific organization.

What Is Proof of Address

Proof of address confirms a person’s connection with a specific address. It does not replace a passport, residence permit, or other identity document.

During verification, a financial institution usually compares:

  • the name in the passport and the proof of address document
  • the address in the document and the user profile
  • the country of residence and tax information
  • the document issue date
  • the organization that issued the document
  • other account information, including the phone number and login locations

Therefore, proof of address should not be treated as an isolated formality. If a person states that they reside in one country but consistently logs into the account from another, uses a foreign SIM card, and receives income from a company in a third jurisdiction, the service may request additional explanations.

This does not mean that an international profile is prohibited. Such a structure is natural for a digital nomad, but it should be consistent and supported by documents.

What Can Be Used as Proof of Address Without a Utility Bill

The list of accepted documents varies. Wise, Payoneer, Revolut, banks, and cryptocurrency platforms may have different requirements even for clients from the same country.

Document What It Confirms What Needs to Be Checked
Lease agreement The right to use a specific property Signatures of the parties, full address, lease term, and property owner’s details
Bank statement The address registered with another financial institution Transactions, issue date, and matching name
Tax document The address known to the tax authority Issue period and whether the tax information is current
Certificate of residence The person’s registration at the address Status of the issuing authority and validity period
Letter from a government authority The person’s official connection with the address Full name, address, date, and sender details
Driver’s license The holder’s address, if stated on the document Whether the specific service accepts it and whether the document is valid
Insurance document The policyholder’s address Whether insurance documents are accepted under the platform’s rules
Educational institution document The student’s address on campus or in a dormitory Requirements regarding the date and status of the educational institution

The inclusion of a document in the table does not guarantee that it will be accepted. For example, one service may accept a lease agreement as standalone proof, while another may request a utility bill in the property owner’s name or an extract from the property register together with it.

It is best to check the current list directly in the account interface or in a response from the compliance team immediately before uploading the document.

Lease Agreement as Proof of Address

For a digital nomad, a lease agreement is often the most accessible alternative to a utility bill. It should relate to an actual property and contain information that makes it possible to establish the connection between the tenant, the property owner, and the property.

The document should preferably include the tenant’s full name spelled in the same way as in the passport, the exact address, the start and end dates of the lease, and the landlord’s details. If the agreement requires the signatures of both parties, the absence of one of them may be grounds for rejection.

A document confirming the landlord’s right to dispose of the property can provide additional reliability to the document package. This may be an extract from the property register or another official confirmation of ownership.

At the same time, a lease agreement should not be created solely for uploading to a service if the person has no actual connection with the stated property. The financial institution may request explanations, an additional document, or confirmation of access to the address.

Bank Statement

Some services accept a statement from another bank or card account if it shows the client’s full name and current address.

This option is suitable for someone who already has an account in their country of residence. The address should first be updated with the bank, and the client should determine which document the bank can issue after the information has been changed.

A regular screenshot from a banking application may not be sufficient. Some organizations accept an electronic PDF statement, while others require an official document containing the bank’s logo, date, and details. In some cases, the statement must show actual transactions rather than only the account balance.

A statement from a new service generally cannot be used to confirm an address with that same service. The document should come from an independent organization.

Government and Tax Documents

If a country has a residence registration system, the local authority may issue a corresponding certificate or confirmation. For KYC purposes, such a document is often stronger than a private agreement because the information is confirmed by a government source.

An alternative may be a letter from the tax authority, a notice assigning a tax identification number, or another tax document containing the address. However, its contents must reflect current information. A document from a previous country of residence will not confirm a new address simply because it remains valid.

A residence permit and visa do not always replace proof of address. They confirm the right to stay in a country but may not contain a specific address. If the platform asks the client to confirm both immigration status and place of residence, two separate documents may be required.

What to Do If Utility Bills Are in the Property Owner’s Name

A utility bill in the property owner’s name does not by itself confirm that the tenant resides at that address. However, when combined with a lease agreement, it may be used as an additional supporting document.

A possible document package includes a lease agreement in the tenant’s name, a document confirming the landlord’s ownership, and a utility bill for the same property. All three documents should show a consistent address.

Not all organizations accept such a package. For example, Payoneer may request a lease agreement together with a utility bill in the property owner’s name, while the rules of another service may allow the lease agreement to be used independently.

A landlord’s utility bill should not be uploaded as the client’s own document, and the name in the file should not be altered. This creates not merely a technical error but a risk of being suspected of providing false information.

If a Digital Nomad Lives in a Coliving Space or Hotel

Short-term accommodation creates the most difficult situation. A hotel receipt or confirmation from a rental platform usually shows payment for accommodation but is not always recognized as valid proof of address.

If a person plans to stay at the property for several months, it is worth asking whether the coliving or aparthotel operator can issue an agreement containing the full address, period of stay, and details of the parties. It is also worth asking whether an official letter confirming residence can be provided.

Ordinary correspondence with a property owner, a booking receipt, or an email without formal details are rarely reliable documents for bank compliance purposes.

When a service requires a stable residential address, constantly changing hotels may not fit its service model. In this case, the person may need either to arrange longer-term accommodation or choose a financial institution that accepts clients with the relevant status.

What Requirements Apply to the Document

Even an acceptable type of document may be rejected because of how it is prepared.

Before uploading the document, several elements should be checked:

  1. Full name. The spelling should match the account and identity document.
  2. Full address. The country, city, street, building number, and apartment number should be legible and match the profile.
  3. Issue date. Banks and fintech services often accept only documents issued within a specified period, such as the last three or six months.
  4. Issuer details. It should be clear which organization or party issued the document.
  5. File integrity. The edges should not be cropped, pages should not be concealed, and the uploaded image should allow all information to be read.
  6. Appropriate format. A PDF, photograph of the original, or another format specified by the service should be used.
  7. Document language. A translation may be required and, in some cases, notarization or an apostille.

The document should be uploaded in exactly the form requested by the platform. If a photograph of the original is required, a PDF scan may fail the automated verification process, and vice versa.

Why Proof of Address Is Rejected

Most often, rejection is related not to the country itself but to the document’s failure to meet formal requirements.

A bank may reject an agreement without signatures or a lease term, a statement without an address, an outdated tax notice, or a photograph showing only the first page of a multi-page document. Problems may also arise if the name is spelled differently from the passport or the apartment number is omitted from the profile.

Sometimes a document passes automated verification but is subsequently rejected by a compliance officer. This may happen if the organization cannot verify the issuer, notices signs of editing, or considers that the document does not confirm actual residence.

Repeatedly uploading the same file without making any corrections rarely helps. The reason for rejection should first be clarified and a list of acceptable alternatives requested.

Residential Address and Tax Residency

Proof of address does not automatically establish tax residency. A person may live at an address in one country while retaining tax obligations in another, particularly during the year of relocation.

However, financial institutions compare the address with the client’s tax information. After the country of residence changes, the service may request a local tax identification number, a tax residence certificate, or an explanation of why the client continues to consider themselves a resident of another country.

The tax country should not be changed solely to align the profile with a new address. Tax status is determined by applicable law, length of stay, center of interests, and the relevant international agreement.

If relocation may change tax residency, this issue should preferably be reviewed separately before updating banking information.

How to Prepare a Consistent KYC Profile

A digital nomad may simultaneously use a passport from one country, a residence permit from another, an address in a third, and receive income from a foreign company. Such a structure does not necessarily create a problem if each element has a clear explanation.

Before undergoing verification, it is useful to take several steps:

  1. Determine the actual address that will be stated in the account.
  2. Request the service’s current list of accepted documents for that country.
  3. Select a document that can be obtained legally and reflects actual residence.
  4. Check that the spelling of the name and address is consistent across all documents.
  5. Check the issue date, language, and file format.
  6. Update related information if it has actually changed.
  7. Prepare an explanation of the international structure of income and residence.
  8. Keep the originals and previous versions of the documents.

There is no need to upload all available documents at once if the service requests only one. Excessive and inconsistent information can sometimes create more questions than it resolves.

What to Do After Moving to Another Country

A bank or payment platform may request proof of address again even if the account has been active for several years. This may be triggered by relocation, document expiration, a change in transaction patterns, or a scheduled KYC update.

After moving to another country, it is worth checking the address registered with banks, fintech services, brokerage accounts, and cryptocurrency accounts. The information should be updated consistently: first prepare an appropriate document, then update the profile and complete the verification process.

A new country of residence may affect the availability of the account, card, and certain features. Therefore, before changing the profile, it is advisable to determine whether the service continues to serve clients from that jurisdiction and which documents will be required.

Keeping an old address solely to retain access to a product is risky. The discrepancy may be detected through payments, login locations, a new tax identification number, or during the next review.

Why You Should Not Use a Random Address

Entering an existing address without any genuine connection to the property may temporarily pass an automated form, but the problem will arise when supporting documents are requested.

Purchasing an edited utility bill, altering a bank statement, or creating a fictitious lease agreement may result in the account being blocked and the source of all incoming funds being reviewed. Restoring the relationship with the service after false documents have been identified is significantly more difficult than preparing a proper document package in advance.

For a financial institution, what matters is not simply the presence of a foreign address in a form, but the ability to confirm that the client is entitled to state that address.

How Wolja Digital Can Help

Wolja Digital helps digital nomads and international professionals prepare documentary proof of address in Georgia for bank compliance, payment services, and other procedures.

We first clarify where the client plans to use the proof of address and what requirements the relevant organization applies. We then select a real property and execute a lease agreement in the client’s name. The connection between the property and its owner is confirmed by an extract from the Public Registry of Georgia, while a utility bill is additionally available for certain addresses.

Such a document package does not replace the entire KYC procedure and does not guarantee a decision by a specific bank. Its purpose is different: to provide consistent documents confirming the client’s genuine connection with the stated address.
